Spend a day with the sweeping views of the south coast and the desolate beauty of Dungeness on this gorgeous early-summer Moved hike.
Meeting at Folkestone Central Station at 10:00 am sharp, we’ll head for the harbour, grab a coffee and then hit the coast to begin our stunning, all-day walk to Dungeness. The coastal path passes by Folkestone’s Victorian-era park, skimming beside colourful beach huts en route to Sandgate and, beyond that, Hythe. From here, we follow a section of the Military Canal before rejoining the shoreline to pass Dymchurch, St Mary’s and a scattering of tiny villages. Before too long, the otherworldly landscape of Dungeness comes into view—England’s only desert, oddly nestled beside the sea.
We’ll follow the coastal road past tarred and painted fishermen's huts, eventually reaching the most famous home on this stretch of southern shore—Prospect Cottage, home of late artist Derek Jarman. Once we reach our finish, we have the option to grab a post-hike drink at the Pilot Inn before catching a bus back to Folkestone.
For those who don’t fancy the whole stretch, there are options to finish at Hythe and Dymchurch for buses back to Folkestone town centre. However, Dungeness is the best bit of the route. So, if I were you, I’d stay until the end!
This is a big old hike, but the path is entirely flat. There are also several opportunities to use amenities on the trail. That said, as it’s a long day, come prepared with lunch, snacks and at least two to three litres of water.
